Evolution of local computing time in parallel modeling of mobile networks

    Get PDF
Introduction: The study concerns the properties of a parallel discrete-event simulation (PDES) model, namely a simple mobile network model known as a personal communication service (PCS) model. In this type of parallel computing, each process has its own computation time, known as local virtual time. The local virtual times change during the simulation process, forming a complex profile similar to the surface growth profile in physics. Methods: We apply the scaling theory of statistical physics to study the properties of the PCS model. We construct a simple local virtual time evolution algorithm for the PCS model and compare this theoretical time evolution model to a standard parallel mobile network implementation in Rensselaer’s Optimistic Simulation System (ROSS).Results: We show that the value of the critical exponent for the mobile network system is close to the value in the theoretical local virtual time profile model. A roughening transition is found in the LVT–PCS model, which belongs to the universality class of directed percolation in dimension 2 + 1.Discussion: We believe that the analogies we found can be useful for preliminary analyses of scalability, process desynchronization, and possible deadlocks in a wide class of parallel discrete-event simulation models

Left-handed metacomposites containing carbon fibers and ferromagnetic microwires

We investigate the microwave behavior of polymer-based metacomposites containing ferromagnetic microwires and carbon fibers. A notable transmission window is observed from the metacomposite containing 3mm spaced parallel microwire array in 1-7 GHz, verifying a left-handed behavior. In the hybrid metacomposites containing both parallel wires and carbon fibers, such transmission window is preserved with a much higher transmittance due to the improved impedance match and hence decreased reflection loss. The introducing of continuous carbon fibers leads to a remarkable anisotropic behavior: left-handed properties are turned on/off by rotating the electric excitation by 90 degrees. The proposed metacomposites are promising for microwave cloaking and sensing applications for aerospace-graded structural components

Aim. To study the possibilities of spiral computed tomography and transrectal ultrasound using for the evaluation of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy effectiveness in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer in order to expand opportunities for sphincter-preserving surgery. Materials and methods. 85 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer were examined with the help of computer tomography and transrectal ultrasound before and after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Results. The changes received as a result of dynamic examination were studied qualitatively and quantitatively. Almost all examined patients had sufficiently pronounced positive changes (reduction in tumor volume as well as malignant invasion through intestinal wall and perirectal fat with a decrease in its density). It has been established that spiral computed tomography has advantages of the possibility to diagnose tumors localized in all parts of the rectum, but this method of examination does not allow for visualization of tumor invasion into different layers of the intestinal wall, in particular into the muscular layer that is a determining factor in differential diagnosis of localized and locally advanced rectal cancer. All of this makes it necessary to supplement the method of spiral computer tomography with the transrectal ultrasound to control the treatment effectiveness. Moreover, the additional use of transrectal ultrasound in locally advanced T3 rectal cancer statistically significantly increases diagnostic informativeness by 1.4 times (P = 0.0021). In the time following, all patients were subjected to radical operations. Conclusions. Thus, the combined application of spiral computed tomography and transrectal ultrasound examination in locally advanced rectal cancer after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy makes it possible to objectivize a tumor response to treatment, in particular, chemoradiotherapy, both by size and depth of bowel wall involvement. It allowed to determine the method and volume of surgical interventions at the preoperative stage and contributed to an increase in resectability and percentage of sphincter-preserving surgery by 12.7 %

External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) is an efficient method of treatment for many types of tumors. But with different approaches, fields, and combinations of doses, the bladder lesions are inevitable. Therefore, one of the priority unsolved issues in the present day radiology is the issue of prevention and control of radiation reactions and injuries. The purpose of the present study was to develop a method for the prevention and treatment of radiation reactions in the treatment of patients with bladder cancer receiving gamma-ray teletherapy (GRT) and to substantiate the antioxidant and reparative role of the Emoxypin drug in this pathology. The severity of radiation reactions in patients receiving radiation therapy in the usual fractionation mode and with multi-fractionation of dose was under study. The total of 27 patients participated in the observation, those with bladder cancer diagnosed and subjected to the EBRT on the definitive treatment program. Analyzing the results obtained, it can be noted that the use of EBRT in the mode of the daily dose multifraction reliably (p = 0.05) reduces the reaction of the bladder mucosa. Thus, the reactions of the 3rd degree (ulcerative) differ by 4.31 times in favor of group II (experimental) where the mode of multifraction and the Emoxypin drug was used. Reactions of the 2nd degree (erosive-desquamated) differ by 1.24 times and also favor group II, but this indicator is unreliable. Reactions of 1 degree (catarrhal) differ by 3.72 times, which has a sufficient reliability in favor of the treatment performed in the patients of group II. The effect of bladder installations in patients with radiation cystitis, complicated with an infectious process, compared with the traditional methods of therapy, permitted to reduce the term of patients’ stay in hospital by 6-7 days.

    Search for Λc+ϕpπ0\Lambda_c^+\to\phi p \pi^0 and branching fraction measurement of Λc+Kπ+pπ0\Lambda_c^+\to K^-\pi^+ p \pi^0

We have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λc+ϕpπ0\Lambda_c^+\to\phi p\pi^0 in e+ee^+e^- collisions using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 915 fb1\rm fb^{-1}. The data were collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+ee^+e^- asymmetric-energy collider running at or near the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) and Υ(5S)\Upsilon(5S) resonances. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Λc+ϕpπ0)<15.3×105\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_c^+\to \phi p\pi^0) <15.3\times10^{-5} at 90% confidence level. The contribution for nonresonant Λc+K+Kpπ0\Lambda_c^+\to K^+K^- p\pi^0 decays is found to be consistent with zero and the corresponding upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B(Λc+K+Kpπ0)NR<6.3×105\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_c^+\to K^+K^-p\pi^0)_{\rm NR} <6.3\times10^{-5} at 90% confidence level. We also measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-favored decay Λc+Kπ+pπ0\Lambda_c^+\to K^-\pi^+p\pi^0; the result is B(Λc+Kπ+pπ0)=(4.42±0.05(stat.)±0.12(syst.)±0.16(BNorm))%\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_c^+\to K^-\pi^+p\pi^0)= (4.42\pm0.05\, (\rm stat.) \pm 0.12\, (\rm syst.) \pm 0.16\, (\mathcal{B}_{\rm Norm}))\%, which is the most precise measurement to date. Finally, we have searched for an intermediate hidden-strangeness pentaquark decay Ps+ϕpP^+_s\to\phi p. We see no evidence for this intermediate decay and set an upper limit on the product branching fraction of B(Λc+Ps+π0)×B(Ps+ϕp)<8.3×105{\cal B}(\Lambda_c^+\to P^+_s \pi^0)\times {\cal B}(P^+_s\to\phi p) <8.3\times 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, minor text change in version

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Get PDF
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE

Search for New Physics with Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Get PDF
A search for new physics is presented based on an event signature of at least three jets accompanied by large missing transverse momentum, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. No excess of events is observed above the expected standard model backgrounds, which are all estimated from the data. Exclusion limits are presented for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. Cross section limits are also presented using simplified models with new particles decaying to an undetected particle and one or two jets

Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state

    Get PDF
A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets. The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version includes a minor typo correction that will be submitted as an erratu

Measurement of the Branching Fraction of the Decay B+π+π+ν\boldsymbol{B^{+}\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\ell^{+}\nu_\ell} in Fully Reconstructed Events at Belle

    Get PDF
We present an analysis of the exclusive B+π+π+νB^{+}\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\ell^{+}\nu_{\ell} decay, where \ell represents an electron or a muon, with the assumption of charge-conjugation symmetry and lepton universality. The analysis uses the full Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) data sample collected by the Belle detector, corresponding to 711 fb1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We select the events by fully reconstructing one BB meson in hadronic decay modes, subsequently determining the properties of the other BB meson. We extract the signal yields using a binned maximum-likelihood fit to the missing-mass squared distribution in bins of the invariant mass of the two pions or the momentum transfer squared. We measure a total branching fraction of B(B+π+π+ν)=[22.71.6+1.9(stat)±3.5(syst)]×105{{\cal B}(B^{+}\to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}\ell^{+}\nu_{\ell})= [22.7 ^{+1.9}_{-1.6} (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 3.5(\mathrm{syst}) ]\times 10^{-5}}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. This result is the first reported measurement of this decay.Comment: 23 pages, 19 figure
